The world has been separated into blue and black. A time for living and a time for hiding.
Magic users are being enslaved and used like puppets for their gifts.
A broken king and his pet sit on a throne unaware of coming dangers.
And god is having a mental breakdown.
Every time you start a new book you have to get used to the style and flow of writing the author uses, and I don’t know why but I really struggle for a little bit at the beginning of this book to get into the author’s rhythm. Sometimes it would be confusing who was being addressed in a sentence and also there would be jumps in time in the story with no indication that any time had passed. That being said once I got use to the writing it was much easier to follow along and I settled into the quirks and flow of it.
When it comes to the story, we are definitely in a dark fantasy world where the characters go through some tough and sometimes brutal experiences. Dark fantasy is a favorite of mine, so I loved the tough nature of the book, but that’s definitely something to keep in mind if that isn’t your vibe.
We follow the Pov of four characters, Gracie, Summer, Skye, and the Gravedigger and I love the way that all the characters start out in separate storylines and slowly make their way together as the story comes to an end. I also really liked the magic system with the magic users being able to use and control a single element (for now). I also thought the ability to charge different things with their power was a cool and unique touch that I don’t think I have seen in many other books.
I think the fantasy world that the book is set in is full of very rich and deep lore and while that is a good thing to have, I think sometimes it was a little confusing. I can tell that there was a lot of work put into the history and lore of the world, but it’s not always presented to the reader in an easy-to-understand way. I hope that in the second book we get to learn more about the world and get to experience it more deeply.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book and I can’t wait to see where the story goes in the next book. Also, C. J. Amato I know you’ve created and formed some unique and amazing characters, but my favorite is still a little carefree wheelbarrow.
