“I drifted just outside, contemplating the dark interior.”
This book was so close to being really good! I picked it up because it was suggested to me as a creepy sci-fi story and for the most part that is what it delivered. I just felt that it fell short in a couple of area that made me not love it the way that I wanted to.
I really loved the setting; generation ship is lead to a deserted planet by a radio signal. When they arrive, they find that all of the buildings and cities are completely empty with very little evidence that anyone ever lived there. Eventually they find a room that is filled with the mangled skeletal remains of thousands of people with each one having been hung on individual hooks. they decide to leave the planet, for obvious reasons, and upon leaving they find a massive alien ship that seems to be deserted, after deciding to investigate this dark dead ship things start to go sideways.
Boom, exactly what I wanted in a spooky sci fi book, but like I said it fell a little short in the execution for me. The rest of the book revolves around exploring the massive, deserted alien ship following the problems and strange things that are encountered during that time. While it was clear the author was trying to set an environment of unease and tension, I never felt like I was pulled in. There were so many times during the book that it was getting to the exact level of creepy I was looking for only to stop and fizzle out instead of following through. Even when some big reveals happened I was just like, oh that makes sense, because it never felt like the tension and suspense was built up properly before that point. This was all made worse by the fact that just when stuff was starting to go a little crazy the book was just over. When I finished reading it was almost like I had been reading a book not knowing that I was missing the second half.
Now, I know that it might sound like I hated the book, seeing as I have just pointed out all the things I didn’t like about it, but that is not true. I actually quite liked the book and might even suggest it to people who were looking for something with that sort of vibe. I just really don’t think that it lived up to the book that it could have been. It had all the elements that I wanted in a spooky sci-fi story, but it just didn’t take the time to fully dive in and commit to that idea. I think that if the book was maybe twice as long to give it time to build and focused more on certain aspects that they started to explore, it would have been an easy double high five, thumbs up, that’s going to be a yes from me type book. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love the idea of this book but not so much the actual book itself. Haha Overall I think this book is a good starting point and easy entry into the world of sci-fi horror, but it just doesn’t quite follow through on what it could be.
