“I’m suddenly very sleepy. I don’t think being unconscious is actually very restful.”
This book was not what I was expecting when I picked it up to read. Just to give you a heads up, this book is a litRPG book, so it is the classic, person in a fantasy world but they have a game interface that has levels and exp and quests and that sort of stuff. I have never read a book in this genre, but if you watch enough anime this type of thing comes up again and again.
So, going in I was expecting just a laid-back fun time read where the MC is the best and becomes insanely overpowered for no reason. Instead, we get to follow Jason someone who has been pulled from his world and plopped into this fantasy one. He does have a game like interface, but the style of it is exclusive to him. Even other people who have been summoned liked him don’t have the same sort of interface. He is told that people summoned from other worlds tend to have powers that help them make sense of their new world and those power usually take the form of something they are familiar with. So, Jason’s having come from our world his interface takes the form of an RPG/game type interface. I liked this approach because it gave you that push to not just think that he had been plopped into a video game, but that he was in a real world and his game interface was just his body’s way of helping him make sense of his new surroundings. Just like in a video game where the interface will help you with beginner quests and helpful information, Jason’s interface is helping him to come to grips with the strange world he finds himself in.
Another thing I liked that was different from this usual type of setting is that the MC is not the strongest or the best. In fact, often time we see Jason thinking he is being smart or clever only to have it blow up in his face. His plans and choices don’t always go as planned and I think this is another way the book brings a more real world and less video game quality to the story. Also, just like everyone else in the world Jason starts at the bottom of the pile and has to work up from there at the same slow rate as everyone else. Maybe this is the way it is in all litRPG books and I’m just basing too much of my knowledge on anime, but it was a refreshing surprise.
Anyways, I really enjoyed this book and torn through it very quickly. Going along with Jason while he bumbles his way through his new world with varying degrees of success, all the while making references to stuff from our world that no one else understands was a very enjoyable ride.
